I have seen 6BK described as “Paint Order Code. This code identifies a factory paint color, stripe, badge, or exterior appearance treatment” but another database uses slightly different wording. Is this normally because the meaning changes by platform, market, or model year?

Check the production month as well as the model year. Mid-year changes are one reason two vehicles with the same badge can have different hardware or descriptions.
